The UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs may be in Division 3 but as the top team in their division, they gave the Gauchos all they could handle.

UCSB held on in three close games for a 30-28, 30-28, 30-28 sweep of the Banana Slugs at Rob Gym on Friday night.

"Overall, I was a little bit disappointed in our effort," Gaucho coach Ken Preston said.

Phil Matthews led the team with nine kills, and Jake Rosener and Sam Moisenco had seven. But the team committed 23 hitting errors.

"We shouldn't be making 23 hitting errors against a small team like that," Preston said.

UCSB (6-7) plays its alumni game today at 5 p.m. at Rob Gym.
